What are the Monroe Holiday Tree Lights?

The Monroe Holiday Tree Walk is a festive, community-centered event hosted by the Monroe Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Monroe. It features approximately 200 decorated and illuminated Christmas trees placed throughout Veterans Park, from the monuments to Fire Station #2, spreading holiday cheer for all ages.

Where is the event held?

The event takes place at Veterans Park, located on North Custer Road in Monroe, Michigan. Trees will be installed in the park area spanning from the memorial monuments to Fire Station #2. Directions can be found on the Contact-Directions page.

Tree Sponsorship and Decoration

How can I sponsor a tree?

Tree sponsorships will open in August 2025 through the Monroe Rotary Club’s event website. Businesses, organizations, and families are encouraged to participate.

What does a tree sponsorship include?

Sponsorship includes one live cut tree, a custom sign, lighting, and event support. Sponsors do not have to, but are encouraged, to decorate their tree and must do so during the public decoration period. All Advertising must be in conformance with Zoning and approved by the City of Monroe. No Logos are allowed on Tree Sponsor Signs (name of sponsor only).

What are the decoration dates and guidelines?

See the Schedule of Events page for dates and times allowed for decorations. Decorations must be weather-resistant and securely attached. All decoration materials must comply with the City of Monroe Park Rules (see attached).

Can I bring my own decorations or lights?

Sponsors are welcome to add their own decorations within the public decoration timeframe. No plugin ornaments or lights other than those provided by the event organizers are allowed due to electrical safety requirements outlined in the park and event rules.

Setup, Volunteers & Event Support

When are trees and equipment installed?

Can I volunteer for the event?

Absolutely! Volunteers are needed for setup, decoration assistance, lighting at night, and takedown. Opportunities will be posted by the Monroe Rotary Club. Contact can be made through the Contact-Directions page.

What support is the City of Monroe providing?

The City of Monroe will:

  • Assess and provide electrical infrastructure
  • Support safety and logistics oversight
  • Assist with park maintenance (trash, bathrooms, etc.)
  • Help coordinate lighting night logistics
If I don’t like my tree, can I switch my sign to a different tree?

No. Taking or moving signs is not allowed, and anyone caught doing so will not be able to purchase a tree in the future.

Regulations

Are there any rules I should know before participating?

Yes. All activities must comply with the City of Monroe Park Rules (see attached). This includes regulations on decorations, noise, electricity, and use of public space.  Signage and advertising must comply with City Zoning. Event guidelines also prohibit logos on the ground signs.

Lighting and Power

Who handles the lighting for the trees?

The Monroe Rotary Club coordinates the lighting setup, in collaboration with the City of Monroe. Electricity will be safely managed in accordance with municipal codes.

Can we plug in additional lighting?

No additional lighting is allowed. No power sources may be altered or overloaded.

Can I choose the color lights on my tree?

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate special requests such as color of lights on your tree.

Amenities and Accessibility

Will restrooms be available?

Yes. Public restrooms will be available at the park and serviced throughout the event.

Will garbage and recycling bins be provided?

Yes. The City of Monroe will maintain trash collection at designated sites in the park.

Is the event accessible for people with mobility needs?

Yes. Veterans Park is accessible and pathways will remain clear to ensure inclusion for all visitors.

Weather, Safety & Clean-Up

What happens in case of bad weather?

The event will continue rain or shine. In the case of severe weather impacting the opening night ceremony, updates will be posted on official channels.

Are pets allowed?

Leashed pets are welcome. Please clean up after your pet and ensure it does not disturb displays. See park rules for full pet guidelines.

Is there a cleanup process?

Yes, once the event concludes, there will be a period where the public must remove their decorations, followed by a period where Rotary volunteers and city staff will take down trees, event displays, and clean up the park. The Schedule of Events page contains all current information.

Can I take the lights and my sign when the event is over?

No, the event organizers reuse the lights and signs when possible, so please do not take them.

Who handles the disposal of the trees?

Tree removal and disposal will be handled by the Monroe Rotary Club with assistance from city departments.
